Year of Yes

Right before the New Year I read Year of Yes by Shonda Rhimes. I was so impressed by the book that I will most likely read it again this year. I absolutely loved this book and the premise around it!

In the book Shonda Rhimes tells about her life and how she never said yes to anything. She always found an excuse to not go to events or to make appearances on shows. Throughout the book the reader followed Shonda Rhimes as she began saying yes to things. Some of the things she said yes to were; making a commencement speech, getting healthier, going to more events, and playing with her kids more.

While I was reading this I began to think of my own life. I realized that I do not say yes to things enough in my own life. I am the type of person who is content with shutting myself in my room and watching hours of Netflix in bed. In fact I do that a lot! However, after reading this I decided that I would make it a point to say yes to more things.

One of the things that I decided to say yes to more is going on more dates, which was harder than imagined. I found that I wanted to stay in and see if my favorite characters from Greys Anatomy would get together or see how the house Chip and Joanna Gaines fixed up ended. I can say that I have gone on more dates than I did last year, but have stayed in a lot.

The second thing I said yes to was more of a social life. I made it a goal to spend more time with friends and would not make up lame excuses as to why I could not hang out. Just from doing that I have noticed that I have more people to talk to and am happier.

The last thing I made a point to say yes to is to not being as shy and afraid of the outcome of things. As I said a few posts back I took a chance and asked someone out. It took a few months of me trying to get the words out, but it took a year of me telling friends I would do it. I finally said yes to asking and I did it. After saying yes to that it became easier to stepping up and talking to more people. I’ve realized that it does not matter what they think of me and in the end at least I tried.

Year of Yes is a great book and definitely a must read! In the comment section below tell me what some of the things in your life you want to say yes to more.

Taking Risks

It’s a new year, and a great time to do things you never thought you would do whether it’s talking to someone you’ve been wanting to, saying yes to more social gatherings, or trying a new outfit you’d never thought of wearing.

Recently I had an experience where I stepped out of my comfort zone, and I asked a guy out. I will say that I had been working up to this for months, and when I tried to ask all I could say was “uhh”. I finally was able to ask, and he said no. Even though he said no, I still felt really good that I was able to ask. I can honestly say that I would not have done this at the beginning of last year.

Now that I have done this and put myself out there I honestly believe that now that I know I won’t die by taking chances I will be able to do it more. This year I am going to make it a goal to take more risks. I’m going to put myself out of my comfort zone more.

What are some risks that you’ve taken? What’s something you’ve always wanted to do, but have been too nervous to do?

New Years Goals

It’s a new year, and I hope you all had a fantastic time ringing in 2016! I spent the day with friends and family. I even had time to reflect on my last year. It was a little hard at times, and I had to message my best friend to talk me through it. I had been looking at pictures and came across some of my ex fiance and me. Many of you know I was engaged, and that the engagement ended a few months ago. As I was looking at these pictures I became upset, because I was supposed to get married this March to a guy I loved so much. Even though there were those hard moments, there were also great moments! I found pictures from when I first started dating my ex, my trip to California, and even my trip to Payson with my mom. Even though not everything is going to go the way I wanted/planned, I am prepared to make this one of my best years so far.

Today when I was at my friend’s house I set goals I want to accomplish during the year. My first goal is to go to the gym 5 days a week. I won’t share why, because it’s a pretty crazy reason, but it will definitely be a good change. To do this I have my friend texting me everyday, just to hold me accountable. My second goal is to blog post once a week! I am already off to a good start on this goal. 🙂 At the end of the year I want to be able to look back and see all that has happened. My third goal is to read the scriptures everyday. I originally thought of this goal, because at the singles ward I was challenged to read Matthew through John before the end of the year, this was back in November. I started out pretty good and read 5 chapters a day! Towards the end of it I began to slack off and did not end up finishing it. I have a lot more time this year, and do plan on finishing the Bible. My fourth and final goal is to cook at home twice a week. I am notorious for going and buying fast food on my night to cook. I will admit that I’ll still probably do that, but I will definitely cook at home those two nights a week too.

As we kick off the new year I encourage you all to think of your last year, and what you would like to accomplish this coming one. Let’s make this a great year. Happy New Year to all of you!
